Strangeness in the Proportion

Why does every indy pop/rock band that has a bit of trippy booming melancholy have to be compared or likened to My Bloody Valentine. I mean how 'bout Jesus and Mary Chain or Sisters of Mercy or The Damned or I dunno, Depeche Mode or Bauhaus or The Velvet Underground or Love and Rockets or Ride or the bands on 4AD? If they sound like MBV, they sound like MBV but sometimes a band sounds nothing like MBV. I think music reviewers need more benchmarks for comparison!

But maybe I'm just complaining for no reason because didn't Elvis Costello say something like "writing about music is like dancing about painting?"
